It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas?

I love Christmas. I don't think I've ever hid that fact from anyone. I was looking for Christmas music on the radio before Halloween and love browsing a department store during the holidays. This past week I would normally be getting my house all ready for Christmas so that my decorations are all up before my mother's family descends upon my house for Thanksgiving. But, I just can't seem to get into the Christmas spirit yet. Maybe its all those naysayers on facebook making fun of us early birds. Or, maybe it is the 70 degree temps we've had in Northern Indiana lately. It does not feel like Christmas yet, and it certainly is NOT beginning to look like Christmas.

But I am trying... In my attempt to get into Christmas spirit I am already thinking about my Christmas cards. However I am not having much luck this year getting my kids to cooperate with me. I have called in reinforcements and we will be shooting the Christmas Card this weekend. But, I said I would try to dig out my old Christmas Cards from years past, and for the most part I was successful. So, without further ado...

Christmas 2005

Christmas Card 1 3

It was Dee Dee's first Christmas and the first year I actually had a professional photo taken for my Christmas Cards. This picture and many of the kids early photographs were taken by my good friend Leah. This picture of my girls went inside a gorgeous card with a Christmas tree on it that opened in the center, revealing the photo. I loved them! The sleigh is my mother's and she sets it out every year next to the tree in her home, and fills it with presents. I thought it was a great way to bring a bit of nostalgia into my Christmas that year.

Christmas 2006

Christmas Card 1 1

Hands down my favorite card to date. Jack was just 12 days old when this photo was taken. When I found out he was due at the beginning of December, I immediately had an image in my head of what I wanted that year's Christmas Card to look like. I can honestly say that Leah nailed it! This photo is exactly what I wanted and it will forever be precious and priceless to me.

Christmas Card 1 2

The inside of that year's Christmas Card doubled as Jack's birth announcement.

Christmas 2007

Christmas Card 1

To be honest I went into that year's photo shoot with low expectations. Trying to get 3 small children between the ages of 4 and just under 1 was going to be difficult. Once again Leah knocked one out of the park! They were all looking at the camera and she somehow managed to capture their personalities perfectly! Plus her creativity when it came to creating the rest of the card was amazing!

Christmas 2008

The year I didn't do a card. You try having a 5, 4, and 2 year old at home and see how much time you have for your Christmas Card!

Christmas 2009

Christmas Card proof2

I know you have all probably seen this one before but I thought I'd share just to round out the collection.

So what will this year bring? I don't know but, you all won't have to wait long to find out. And hopefully after the card is done, it will start to feel a little more like Christmas around these parts!

Blackberry = Love

This is my phone

DSC_0027

I LOVE my phone. That is NOT an understatement.

As a SAHM, I find that my phone is my connection to "the outside world". I use it to talk to people, e-mail, facebook, play games, as a camera, I even keep all my appointments in there. Plus, having a way to entertain a kid in a doctor's office is a way undderated benefit! I'm telling you, if there was one "thing" in my life I would not like to go without it is my phone. When I leave the house without it, I feel naked.

True my little blackberry is slightly outdated. But, it is impossible to keep up to date with the latest technology without going broke. However, what it lacks in cool factor it makes up for in personality. For instance my simple white cover with the multi-color polka dots and the whimsical tree on the back. Sure the cover is broken and falls off sometimes, but I love it. Or, there's the picture of my family that is my wallpaper. Definite personality. My ringtone (the True Blood intro music) makes me smile when someone calls. In a way, I feel like it is a small extension of me.

So yes, I am unafraid to say I love my phone. Unapologetic. Shameless. Remorseless. Blackberry = Love.

The Ever Elusive Christmas Card Photo

So we've all been there right? Trying to get that perfect Christmas card worthy picture of the family. The kids are fighting, or they won't look at the camera, somebody blinked, or turned their head at the last second. But, every once in awhile you get it, that perfect shot! Sometimes it matches the vision in your head and sometimes it doesn't. Either way, a great family picture is priceless!

These are actually my mom's family pictures from her Christmas card last year. They were taken by my cousin's girlfriend Chris who is uber talented! Those of you are friends with me on Facebook may have seen them before, but I wanted to share them here anyway.

Here is my little family... Me, Chris, Reagan, Dee Dee, and Jack

Even though my mom only ended up using the big group shot, I was still really excited to have all of these family pictures! I gave her a collage of them for Christmas last year.

As for me, I can be pretty picky about my Christmas Card photos, but with a little help from "the other Chris" I got some great pics, that really captured my kids and their individual personalities!

Here is my actual Christmas card from last year...

So, this year I have a brand new camera of my own! I love my Nikon! I figure I should be able to take the Christmas card shot myself right? Well, that is my goal for this weekend, getting the Christmas card shot for this year. If I don't get it, I might just have to call in the reinforcments! Wish me luck!
Oh, and I'd also really like to get my Christmas tree up...

Back in the Saddle

Life is short. I have been reminded of that this week. Life is short and in a moment it can change. Sometimes you get one of those phone calls. You know the one, when you pick up the phone and you instantly know something is wrong. I got one of those phone calls this week. My parents had been in a car accident. Long story short, everyone is okay. But it was one of those days that really made me stop and think. It could have been so much worse. I could have lost them both and I dont even want to think about what that would mean for my life. To be honest that has happened one too many times already in my family and with close friends. But, when it hits that close to home it kind of makes you re-evaluate some things. I decided that I needed to look at my life and some of the things I am doing, and those I am not. Documenting my children's lives is one of the things I have NOT been doing. It has been over a year since I blogged anything... that is a long time! Looking back on some of my posts I can't believe how much my kiddos have grown in that year! So I am going to try to get back in the saddle again, if not so much for me but for them. I have a favorite post that I wrote awhile back it was short and sweet but yet for me it said so much. It was titled "Is just staying home enough?" I think that re-reading it every now and then is good for my soul. It also helps me keep my sanity on the days that I wake up wondering how this became my life.

I have three amazingly wonderful children...

and a mighty cute hubby too.

I will forever cherish them and the opportunity I have been given to be their mother and wife.

I'm thankful that what could have been a tragedy awoke something in me. Life IS short, I'm just trying to live it.

Reagan's First Day of School

Reagan Kindergarten 1

I have so many summer pictures and so many summer stories that I need to share! But, I couldn't let today pass me by without acknowledging Reagan's first day of Kindergarten. She is officially in school all day long now and in three weeks time she will begin wearing a uniform! Gotta love Catholic school! It is amazing to me how outgoing my oldest baby is! She had no problems leaving home this morning. She was up early at 5:45 ( her choice not mine) and we were out the door by 7:15! When I walked her in I met her teacher (she's new this year) and helped her find her seat. I asked her if it was okay for me to leave and she said "Yes mommy,(insert exasperated sigh) just go!" I was almost in tears and she was just ready to start her day. So many firsts for me! My first kindergartner, my first day leaving her all day, my first time packing a school lunch! I hope that she comes home excited and with all sorts of fun expectations for the coming year! When they say that they grow up too fast, they mean it! I know everyone says it but it is SO TRUE! In the blink of an eye she will be in high school! Then that little exasperated sigh of hers will really come in handy!
Here is my post from her first day of school last year! I thought I did a good job this year documenting but after looking @ that I guess I was wrong! Ha, well at least I did document it! It is the thought that counts right?

Reagan, live and in concert

IMG00148

reag @ the Concert

Yep, that's my baby girl belting her heart out @ yesterday's Provident Studio Concert 2009! I am so proud of her... she did so AWESOME! She was the 4th act overall but the first to sing and sing she did! No, it wasn't perfect, but it was the best I've ever heard her do. She sang Castle on a Cloud from Les Miserables and it was just too precious! The rest of the concert was pretty awesome too, they are a really talented group of kids. Reagan had a blast watching the rest of her "singing friends" perform as well as cheering on Aunt Ally(my little sis). The rain held off for a little while and then poured for about 20 minutes right in the middle of the show. We stuck it out and when the rain stopped the show continued on. I am so looking forward to many more concerts and performances and the opportunity to watch my daughter shine! There is nothing like it in the world!

Doesn't she just look adorable?

The Loss of My Wisdom

I am a horrible blogger. I have not posted anything substantial in forever. But, at least this week I have an excuse...

IMG00140

I had my wisdom teeth extracted on Monday. I am not going to lie... it hurt like hell. I am still miserable. The first couple days I was so nauseous I couldn't even keep my limited liquid diet down. Now I am headed back to the dentist this afternoon because I think I might have one dry socket. I have no idea what that means or why they call it that but I am pissed. I did everything I was supposed to do. Yet, I am still in pain and still on so doped up on painkillers that I fell asleep for an hour this morning. Home alone with 3 kids 5 and under and I fell asleep for an hour! Um, hello! I can't be doing that. Maybe along with my wisdom those teeth also contained my common sense! SO, anyway I hope the dentist has answers for me cuz I am ready for this to be over!!!

A Phavorite Photo (and some deep thoughts)

I realize that not many people are interested in seeing a 4 year old photo of my firstborn. Surely I could have posted many numerous other things. But, I am procrastinating and I came across this photo on my flickr stream, a photo which I just happened to come across in my files a few weeks ago. And well, I love it. Reagan at 18 months old. About to be a big sister. My pride and joy. Look, I even took the time to paint her toenails! Oh, how simple life was then... She was spending the day at Grandma's house while I did my very first garage sale. That was crazy! Anyway, isn't she too cute?! Just thought I'd share...

IMG_0527

Okay, wait, I can make it relevant...

I just noticed while I was previewing my post that Reagan is doing what I call the Wysong squat. That would be Wysong, as in my mom's side of the family. Her dad (my grandpa) was a brick mason. When I was little everyone always used to joke about how some of his grand kids could squat so easily and stand up without using our hands. Funny that I would notice that today...

15 years ago today, my mom's brother Mel died. I can hardly believe that so much time has passed. He would have been welcoming his first grandchildren this spring, twins. I can hardly believe that so much has happened to our family in that span of time. But, we keep moving on... taking the good and the bad and living life. I read the book "My Sister's Keeper" recently and was struck by a statement towards the end.

"As much as you want to hold on to the bittersweet memory that someone has left this world, you're still in it."

Harsh? Yes. But true.

I hope that today as we remember him, we can continue living our lives and looking towards the future. Let's look forward to seeing those babies at 18 months old, and to their graduations, and their weddings, and to the days when they have babies of their own.

An Unlikely Love Story...

Today is my 8th wedding anniversary.

It kind of got me thinking about what I could possibly do for a post today, and I was stumped. Then as I was checking my usual blogs, one got me thinking. Heather @ Adventures of Aidanpod asked a simple question. "How did you and your man meet and fall in love?" And I thought, perfect! I have never actually written this story down before and what a perfect day to do it. So here it is, our love story. An unlikely one at that!

A little over ten years ago I was nearing the end of my high school experience, preparing to graduate and go off to Hanover College in the fall with my best friend Shannon. My parents had adopted J.C. that Christmas and his birthday was fast approaching. I had just gone through a really horrible break-up with my high school boyfriend. I was not looking for a relationship. But, sure enough, it found me and swept me of my feet, changing the course of the life I had planned for myself.

That year on May, 14 1999 (J.C.'s birthday) my parents had a party. They invited family and some close friends. Among those friends were the Polk's who had lived down the road since we moved into the neighborhood when I was in the third grade. They had two sons. One, who I knew very well Jeremiah (Miah) and I had grown up together. He was only a year older than I was. I can still remember sitting with my friend Kathryn on the edge of the basketball court watching him play. I was there of course for the moral support she needed to sustain her fleeting crush on him.

Back to my point...

Their other son's name was Chris and he was five years older than me. He was just home from college and living @ home. My parents had just weeks earlier made him J.C.'s godfather. They wanted him to have a younger, Spanish speaking role model to look up to. He was older and more mature. He had facial hair for God's sake! He could pound back the beers with my dad and he chewed tobacco. I never thought he'd notice me, and I probably didn't want him to. But, fate has a way of bringing people together, and that night at a six year old's birthday party we started talking.

I had never felt so grown up in my life...

After the party I went downstairs to brag to my older brother Shawn.

"Chris Polk was flirting with me tonight."

Of course he said I was a stupid kid and that I must have been hallucinating!

Then next day I went to my Senior Prom and had what up until then, was the worst night of my life. My ex for a date, a new crush who didn't know I existed, and I threw up in the bathroom. I went home and cried myself to sleep and didn't get out of bed the next day.

Then on Sunday night, Chris called. My mom brought me the phone and I couldn't believe my ears. He wanted to know if I felt like going to a movie with him and then getting something to eat. I of course jumped at the chance and said yes.

Little did I know that there was a story behind this phone call. You see Chris had gone home from the party talking about me too. And when his cousin called him on it, she bet him that he couldn't call and get me to go out with him. She obviously lost.

We spent the next few weeks completely inseparable, which is easy to do when you can walk through someone else's backyard to get to each other. Our parents were worried, about our age difference, about my going off to school in the fall, and about the potential catastrophic damage to their friendship. But, we were having fun.. there weren't any expectations and we were just getting to know each other. Preppy popular boy meets drama geek, no one would have put us together in a million years! But, it worked. He encouraged me to reconnect with my friends who I had so foolishly avoided for the last two and a half years. With graduation approaching, we all spent the day on the lake and the conversation turned to the after graduation party. Being in high school we were looking for a way to make it a little more "fun". I sort of raised my hand and volunteered the information that my "new boyfriend" just happened to be 22. Problem solved.

Chris and I am my graduation open house

chris and katie graduation

But, in all seriousness I still wasn't ready to deem this a "relationship" or make any sort of commitment to it. Until I went to New York. At the end of June, I took a theater trip to the Big Apple for a week and had the time of my life. Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, RENT, Beauty and the Beast, and so much more! When I got home there was a huge bouquet of roses waiting for me... one for every day since May 16 (our first date). I was so happy to see Chris, and I knew that that week away had changed everything.

Standing outside the car before I left for New York

IMG00040

To make what is already a long story short, I rearranged everything. I didn't go to Hanover like I had planned, I stayed closer to home at Manchester College. I came home every weekend and usually one night a week. The "boy next door" had stolen my heart when I least expected it. That Thanksgiving when he proposed, I accepted.

Everyone thought we were crazy! The only answer I could give them was, "when you know, you just know."

We waited a year and a half and were married on June 23, 2001.

Chris and Katie Wedding

Eight years and three babies later, I wouldn't change it for the world. Yes, there have been ups and downs. But, we have gotten through the best and the worst of it together. There is no one else I'd rather kiss goodnight, and no one else I'd rather wake up too each morning! I love you honey, and if you are reading this... Happy Anniversary!

Just for fun, a pic of my bridesmaids... we all had a blast that day!

Sorry for the horrible quality of the photos my scanner isn't working and I had to take pictures of the pictures with my BlackBerry.

Dee Dee's Birthday Party

Here are some of my fav pics from Dee Dee's Birthday...
I actually didn't even take most of them. Big thanks go out to my SIL Rachael who manned the camera while I did "party stuff"!

Why is it that with three kids between the ages of 2 and 6, I am just officially tired of birthdays? I was honestly just glad to be done with the party. Some of it came out the way I had wanted, and other things I just let slide. And I am totally okay with that. What is wrong with me? I haven't even begun to enter the stage of sleepovers and Chuckie Cheese parties with the entire class from school... Lord help me then!

Letting the Kids be "Kids"

I'll be the first one to admit that I can be a little overbearing when it comes to my kids. I am easily stressed by little things like sandboxes, sidewalk chalk, and a fun little activity Reagan likes to refer to as "making dirt soup". I guess I stress about these things only because I can anticipate the mess, and the clean-up that comes afterward. I don't like it when clothes get dirty or ruined. I hate having to scrub sand out of some one's hair in the bathtub. But, I am working on trying to let some of these little things go and just let my kids be "kids".

So the other day, when we were cleaning out the garage in preparation for Dee Dee's birthday party, I just let loose and gave up. We were rinsing the floor of the garage off with the hose and the kids were having a ball trying to get in the path of the water and get themselves wet. Finally I just turned it on them and by the end of it they were all stripped down to their undies (or pull-ups) and they were soaking wet! They had a ball and to be honest so did I...

Dee Dee queen of the hose!

Reagan the ever protective big sister

I guess I learned that sometimes just letting kids be "kids" can actually make me feel like a kid again... and that can make all the mess in the world worthwhile~

Pefect Pictures?

I have said before how frustrating it is to me that I can never get a good group shot of my kids. Someone is always looking away, or has their eyes closed, or on a really bad day... pouting. Why is this?

Here is a picture of the kiddos on Easter, that I never got around to posting.

101_2276

This was the best one I got. I know it isn't horrible. Jack looks great, and at least Reagan is smiling. I have no idea what is going on with Kennedy!

Sometimes it seems like you can have this image of the perfect shot in your head and when it doesn't translate to the camera it can be frustrating. My problem is that I have managed to get those perfect shots before. But, I can only seem to get them when someone else is behind the camera. This picture was taken when Jack was just two weeks old and four days out of the hospital (story here). It was the second week of December and we used it for our Christmas card that year. I know this is a bad scanned in copy, but at the time it was perfect! It was exactly what I had in mind, if not more.

101_2349

This one has made an appearance on the blog before. Also a Christmas card picture... you try getting a 3yr old, an 2yr old, and a 9 month old who is crawling to sit still long enough for this one! It was a miracle. It is still my favorite picture of the three of them.

So for now, I won't complain if this is the best I can do on my own...

But... Leah do you think you could give me a call? Its time.

May 18, 2009

The story behind the picture...

Sorry to keep you all waiting! I'm sure the suspense must have been killing you. There were quite a few guesses as to why I had this picture taken...

Reagan Polk

But only one of you was right. If I was awarding a prize, it would have to go to Toni. I have no idea how you knew, but kudos to you! Yes, this picture was taken as a professional head shot for my little aspiring superstar! A couple of weeks ago Reagan stood on a stage in front of a theater full of people and sang her little heart out!

101_2310

101_2311

Our local Cancer Care Foundation hosted an American Idol night at the Wagon Wheel Theater. I know, I know she's a little young to be an American Idol. But, they had a special category just for the "future idols". Turns out she was the youngest one of the night and she had to go first! She sang Tomorrow from Annie and even though she forgot some of the words, she did amazing! I was just so proud that she had the courage to get up there and do it. I tell you this girl is not afraid of anything! She didn't raise the most money, but she was a winner in my book!

So, I have to give another little shout out to my friend Leah, who took the head shot. It was a whirlwind of events around here last month! We found out about the show on a Wednesday, auditioned that Thursday, and on Friday got the call that she had made the show! We had three weeks to get her ready for it! When they told me they needed a good picture of her I was afraid I would have to use her horrible school picture from this year. I called Leah and she came and took this photo on Saturday. I can't thank her enough!
So, this may have been the most exciting event of the month, but rest assured it was not the only event! I have many more pictures to post and stories to tell, so stay tuned!
