Tonight I am beside myself. Very rarely do I find myself without words, but I am. I do not know how to share this news that I so desperately need to share. This afternoon, our beloved dog Captain died. I wish I had a more eloquent way to put it. I very much want to share with you how much we loved him and what a big part of our lives he was, but I cannot find the right words. He was seven years old and today when I got home from picking Reagan up from pre-school I found him on the kitchen floor. There was a trail of poop and blood on the floor and what looked like vomit. I immediately called the vet and they said to bring him in. I was there in 15 minutes tops and by the time I got there he was almost gone. He was limp and lethargic and had a very low body temperature. He was barely breathing and his heart rate was slowed. They tried to figure out what was happening to him, but it was all happening too fast. Within 45 minutes of arriving at the clinic he was gone. Chris and I were both with him and the vet assured us that he was not suffering. We were able to say goodbye and so were the kids. I'm not sure they completely understand what happened. How can I explain it to them when I don't understand it myself. I just wish I knew why, or what had happened? The vet said the most likely scenario is that he had a tumor that burst or a blood clot that broke off. She said that it was nothing that I did or did not do, but I just keep going over and over it in my head. I thought maybe if I wrote this post it would help me get some closure.
Here is Cappy a few months ago...

Chris and I got Captain the October after we were married. When I brought him home Chris said he was the ugliest dog he had ever seen. Just imagine that big tongue hanging out of a tiny puppy mouth. He was a teacup chihuahua, but it didn't take him very long to get pretty fat. Even still he only weighed 5 lbs. He was like a baby to us for a year and he went everywhere with me. At the time we had 2 dogs. Tinkerbell has since gone to live with my mom because she isn't so good with little kids. When I was pregnant with Reagan, Chris wanted to name her Morgan. I said there was no way we were going to have a dog named Captain and a daughter named Morgan! Right after Reagan was born Cappy started getting sick. It turned out that he had a problem with his spine and the doctors recommended that we put him to sleep. We refused to give up on him and found a doctor who would perform the surgery. They took a piece of bone from his hip and fused it onto his 2nd vertebrae. It took him a few months to recover but then he was as good as new. He adjusted to the kids so well and they could pull on him and pet him as much as they wanted. He particularly liked visitors because they tended to fuss over him since he was so little. He could always coax an extra treat out of some of Chris' friends. He was my first baby, back before I knew what it was like to have kids. Today I couldn't have imagined being more upset if he was my actual child. He was the best dog anyone could have asked for and we will miss him so much!
Oh Katie I am so sorry to hear about your sweet dog. I hope you do find some closure somehow but I am sure that will come with time. I am sorry you are going through this.
ReplyDeleteOh Katie - I am so sorry. I know how hard it is. Here is a poem I hope will help....
ReplyDeleteJust this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Katie, I am so, so sorry! We have two dogs ourselves and our girls would be devastated as well. I will pray for you. God is near to the broken hearted. I'm so sorry.
ReplyDeleteKatie,
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about Cappy. As you know we have 2 dogs that I LOVE DEARLY and would be absolutely devastated if anything happened to either of them. They are like our first kids, too. Hang in there!

I, myself, was heartbroken to hear about Cappy. I think of what a lovable little creature he was. He is an irreplaceable member of the family, and he will be missed greatly. Also, that picture of him is really good! I think I will steal it from your Flickr feed. Bye Cappy.
ReplyDeleteThe trees were blowing in the gentle breeze
ReplyDeletethe sun was shining; thru the leaves on the trees
The meadows are green; and the grass grows tall
off in the distance; you can see a waterfall
Over the falls; down through the creek
the water flows gently; as a rabbit sneaks a peek
Far up above; in the deep blue sky
the birds soar high; as they fly by
The animals play; at the bridge by the waterfall
chasing each other; and just having a ball
They play all day; from morning to night
there's no more rain; just warm sunlight
Off in the distance; the trumpets would blow
all would look up; and notice a bright glow
The harps would play; and the angels would sing
as another pet has come home; who had earned his wings

I am so sorry for this loss of your Cappy.
You know we loved Cappy and Austin was becoming really fond of him. I think Cappy was the smallest dog Austin has ever been around. Austin loved to chase him around the house. You would see Cappy then Austin would be right behind him. Cappy didn't want to be caught...I didn't blame him. He was always such a good dog. Especially to the children. He lived 7 years. Many more than the Dr's expected. We will miss Cappy. And between you chris and miah and I his red rocket tooo.....which we didn't see much these past few years. inside joke. I know it will be tough for a while. But maybe another pet will help you heal. And could help the kids to be able to love on another doogie. Like they loved on Cappy...Love you all
ReplyDeletep.s. I had to mention the inside joke. I knew it would make you smile. We had many laughs over that red rocket. Sending hugs your way....
ReplyDeleteso sorry....
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your dog. We're thinking of you guys.
ReplyDeleteKatie, I am so sorry!!! You sweet thing! What an awful scene to come home to. You probably didn't even have time to mentally prepare for him being sick, much less passing away. I hope you're doing ok. Praying for you, girlfriend.
